Wirral Tourism Awards

Posted by Anne Benson on November 2, 2007 5:13 PM

The next market takes place on Saturday, November 10 from 9am

The Wirral Tourism Awards, held at Thornton Hall Hotel, took place last night and I was invited along by The Mersey Partnership.
It was a great event, very well attended and lots of familiar faces. I enjoyed the company of Martin King and James Wood, along with others at the table.
It is hard to cater a big event and make sure everyone gets well-cooked and presented food but Thornton Hall did really well.
The starter of chicken, smoked bacon and red pepper terrine was delicious and well-balanced. The main was roast sirloin of Welsh beef which was cooked perfectly and was meltingly good, it came with massive crisp Yorkshire pudding and lightly cooked vegetables and a good red wine gravy. Another nice traditional touch was an individual apple crumble but with a crème anglaise which was also lovely.
After dinner it was onto the awards and it was great to see all the winners and I was really pleased that they mentioned Wirral Farmers’ Market shortlisting for the BBC award.
It was coming to a close and we just had one more award to give, The Wirral Tourism Ambassador Award, I expected to hear, like we had with the others, a shortlist and then the announcement of a winner.
But then the compere Roger Summerskill started talking about food festivals and farmers’ market and I was bemused as to who would be getting the award, when suddenly he announced my name. I was in a state of total shock and apparently, I am told, my face was a picture! It was really, really wonderful to be honoured in such a way and thanks to everyone involved in the awards. It was totally unexpected and totally amazing and it means a lot to me.
